Confidentiality of Library Records
All records of the Blairstown Public Library relating to individual patron registration and circulation of materials by specific patrons are considered to be confidential in nature. These records include reserve requests, ILL requests, Internet use, overdue records, sign-up sheets and in-house usage records.
The library will not release information that would reveal the identity of a patron who used certain materials or requested an item of information from the library. Addresses, phone numbers or any other personal information from a patron's record shall not be given out, because release of such information could discourage potential patrons from applying for a patron card/number. (Code of Iowa 22.7[18]). Information concerning the account of a patron will be released to that person only.
The Blairstown Public Library will offer family cards, allowing some or all members of a family to check out under the same patron number. With the family card, we consider there is implied consent for the members of that family to have knowledge of the transactions under that account.
Minors over the age of 8 and under the age of 18 may have an individual patron account, with the written consent of their parents or guardians. The library will release information to the parent or guardian of that minor child for the purpose of recovering overdue material and settling accounts for lost, late or damaged materials for which a parent or guardian may be considered liable. Information will not be provided to parents or guardians who are attempting to determine what library materials their minor children are using.
The library shall not release any information about its patrons or their reading to individuals or to any private or public agency, (local, state or federal) without an order from an appropriate court of law.
Requests for the release of confidential patron records and information will be honored if submitted in writing and accompanied by an order from the court as outlined in Chapter 22.7 of the Iowa Code.
